Prophecies of the Messiah

Micah 5:2

But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.

The Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (See Luke 2:1-7)

Isaiah 7:14

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His hame Immanuel.

The Messiah would be born to a virgin (See Matthew 1:23)

Genesis 49:8-10

Judah, you are he whom your brothers shall praise; your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; your father’s children shall bow down before you. Judah is a lion’s whelp; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He bows down, he lies down as a lion; and as a lion, who shall rouse him? The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes; and to Him shall be the obedience of the people.

The Messiah would have His lineage through Judah (See Luke 1:30-32)

Numbers 24:17

I see Him, but not near; a Star shall come out of Jacob; a Scepter shall rise out of Israel, and batter the brow of Moab, and destroy all the sons of tumult.

A star out of Judah would herald His arrival (See Matthew 2:1,2)

Isaiah 61:1-3

The spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planing of the Lord, the He may be glorified.

The Messiah’s ministry was predicted in advance (See Luke 4:16-21)

Psalm 55:12,13

For it is not an enemy who reproaches me; then I could bear it. Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me; then I could hide from him. But it was you, a man my equal, my companion and my acquaintance.

The Messiah would be betrayed by a close friend (See Matthew 26:47-50)

Zechariah 11:12,13

Then I said to them, “If it is agreeable to you, give me my wages; and if not, refrain.” So they weighed out for my wages thirty pieces of silver. And the Lord said to me, “Throw it to the potter”--that princely price they set on me. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the Lord for the potter.

The Messiah would be betrayed for 30 pieces of silver, and that money would be used to buy the potter’s field (See Matthew 27:3-9)

Isaiah 53:4-7

Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth.

The Messiah would be led like a lamb (silent) to the slaughter (See John 1:29, Acts 8:32-35)

Psalm 22:16

For dogs have surrounded Me; the congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My feet;

The Messiah’s would be pierced for us (See Luke 23:33, 24:39)

Psalm 22:1

My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?

The Messiah’s last words would include, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (See Matthew 27:46)

Psalm 34:20

He guards all His bones; not one of them is broken.

The Messiah’s bones would not be broken (See John 19:36)

Isaiah 53:9

And they made His grave with the wicked--but with the rich at His death. Because He had done no violence, nor was any deceit in His mouth.

The Messiah would be buried in a rich man’s grave (See Matthew 27:57-60)

Psalm 16:10

For You will not leave My soul in Sheol (the grave), nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption (or decay).

The Messiah would be resurrected from the dead (See Matthew 28:2-7)
